You will begin by using an ink pad to take your fingerprints and transfer them to the Fingerprint Activity Sheet.
- Roll the “print” portion of your thumb over the ink pad from the left side of your thumb to the right. You do not have to push down really hard!
- Roll the “print” portion of your thumb from the left side of your thumb to the right in the correct box on your paper to make a thumbprint. Again, you do not need to push down hard as this could cause the print to smudge and blur. Use a light pressure.
- Continue this process to make a fingerprint of all ten fingers on the “My Prints” worksheet. You may want to clean your fingertips in between each print to avoid accidentally smearing the next print.
- Use the reference sheet and your notes and a magnifying lens to help you figure out what type of pattern is found in each of your fingerprints. Label each one with the pattern’s name.
- Once you have completed this process and cleaned your hands: count up the amount of loops, arches and whorls, and write the numbers in the spaces provided on your Activity Sheet.
- Make a prediction about the frequency that these characteristics will appear across the class. Will they be the same for all students?
- Conduct a survey of the characteristics that the rest of the class recoded, compile your results and record the information on your Activity Sheet
